The benefits of measuring social media is learning what is trending. Social media began as a medium to express ideas, but we now see social media as a place to start trends. From deciding who is a popular musician, what fashion is in style, or what type or slang is in or out social media can decide for the masses. On a company or business level it can help promote new items and see how people are reacting and interacting with a post. What we can also analyze is when a person or thing rises to popularity and declines in popularity; this allows us to make conclusions on why in came in and out of trend. Companies can use this data to figure out what campaigns and ad they should be running and on what platforms they should be hosting it on. The measurement of social media is also dangerous since user’s data can be used in an unethical manner. At this moment in time our data is primarily used to promote and sell things we may or may not want, but this can be used to expose our personal lives if it got into the wrong hands.
