What is Social Media?

I define social media as a platform where people can interact with one another. Merriam-Webster defines it as forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos). I personally don't consider dating apps social media but by both my own definition as well as the one found in the dictionary, they kind of are. People are talking to one another and I would assume scheduling dates/trips and that seems pretty social to me. They also share photos and videos on the apps which is also a key characteristic of social media. I would say that the exclusion of certain social media says that we as a society are still figuring out what social media is and how to measure it.
