What is social media?

To me, social media is a means to be able to branch out, express yourself, or even pick up something from somebody else. One site that I would say IS a social media platform but is generally considered that it is not is Spotify, as people generally think of it as a music streaming platform and nothing more. But the fact that one can share playlists or follow artists makes it a social platform as you can share or express what you like with other people. The exclusion of some social media apps just generally has to do if we like it's ecosystem of if we would rather stick to what we know

  1. I would define social media as an interactive social chain which involves online outlets. It is a way in which humans can interact with each other where they exchange ideas and communication among themselves without being physically present. Over the past decade social media has definitely evolved and become a big part of everyone's life (at least here in the United States). If you are able to communicate with a group of person and interact with them in any way through a virtual window, then I consider it social media. We all know about snapchat, twitter, instagram, and of course Facebook. However, many people don't realize that YouTube is also part of social media. There you can upload videos and now pictures where others can go and explore the media that has been uploaded. Messages can be communicated through the comment sections, and information can be shared as well. Sometimes people limit themselves to the traditional "post a picture and give it a like" as what defines social media. However, social media is simply social interactions that take place online.
