Define Social Media by Jennifer Serrato

Social media has become an essential need in our daily lives. It is amazing how such a small device, such as our phone, can access so many media platforms. We use social media to share ideas, exchange information, get the latest news, sports, make profit by selling and buying merchandise, finding and posting jobs or careers, finding relationships and even communicating around the world. There are many types of media platforms, some being Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. These media platforms are becoming a necessity within our lives and jobs, especially now during this current pandemic. Many of us, including myself, are using Zoom or Microsoft teams for our jobs, meetings, interviews, and education. Social media has become a necessity within our lives and is rapidly growing and will continue to dominate in the future.

I believe that some type of social media that we don’t consider as traditional sites are email services such as Hotmail or Gmail. I believe it is still a way of being social because you are still interacting with others by sending messages. I believe the reason why it is not considered a type of social media is because it doesn’t have large audiences with live sessions and large interactions among people. Gmail has created a form of chat messenger that allows you to interact by chatting and it even has a video option if people prefer that way of communicating.

Many social media platforms have found ways to allow large number of audiences to interact with each other. People are attracted to social media sites that have allowed them to share ideas, comment, and have conversations. I believe if people cannot interact with each other then there is no point of having a social media site.
