Tumblr: About Me

Tumblr is a very common social media site. The site is mainly used as a blog platform and image sharing. It was originally founded by David Karp in 2007. Today however, it is owned by the company Automattic which also owns Wordpress.com. At the early stages of Tumblr, there was relatively no restrictions on the content that was uploaded. In fact, about 22% of the content shared contained pornographic images and video. In 2013 when the social media site joined forces with Yahoo, it began limiting the exposure of inappropriate content but did not eliminate it entirely. It wasn’t until the end of 2018 when Tumblr announced it would ban any content containing pornographic purposes as well as nudity of humans. This censorship caused a lot of commotion since it accidently recognized non-pornographic pictures as ‘inappropriate’ content therefore deleting them. In my opinion the site did a good job at banning this type of content. The use of vulgar language or offensive terms is very common not just on the internet, but in real life as well. Therefore, I believe there is nothing else that Tumblr should censor.
