Meme Analysis

 

I chose the meme “Step It Up.” I know the Simpsons have become extremely popular because they are well known to predict future events. I remember when their “prediction” of Donald Trump winning the presidential election back in 2016 went viral. I find these prophecies to be quite frankly a bit eerie, especially if they turn out to be accurate. Like how did they know, but maybe it was all a coincidence?  In this meme, two characters symbolize the year 2020 and 2012. An older man (2020) slaps the younger kid (2012). From what I understand, 2012 was supposed to mark the end of the world, but here we are eight years later. Meanwhile, 2020 has been a very eventful year full of chaos, with a pandemic affecting the entire nation, wildfires, natural disasters, brutal violence, and so on, and all these events sound more associated with the end of the world. Memes are a creative way people can express their concerns or viewpoints about anything, especially when it comes to issues in politics. They also say a lot about power because they can unite or divide social groups.
