Blog Post #5 Online Communities

A while back in my high school years, there was this app named Kik. It originally was a texting app, where you would signup to create a username and you could chat with friends or strangers.  Within a couple of years and updates, they added the feature to find and create groups. In the groups' section, you would type in keywords like “car” and it would list all the chats/ groups created about cars. Anyone could create a chat room that would host up to 100 people. Typically, the chats with most people would be the most popular and would show first at the top as it had the most amount of active user. The ones that had fewer people typically were not as active or people would generally be actively participating at certain times, depending on where they lived. I personally joined different types of groups ranging from a specific make and model of car to something more general like art or music. What really made this community special was when you had a good majority of people active, chatting, and interacting at the same time. In my opinion, Kik groups made me feel as if I was talking to other people in real life as communication was instant in the chats. Compare to other communities, forums, or groups, they lack that instant feedback as sometimes you must refresh the page or people post and go do something else. Furthermore, I personally would consider Kik Groups a community, others might not since Kik is a primly texting app, but the fact that there are different groups ranging from cars, arts, music, makeup, particular countries, and more, I think it makes it a community as to any other but in a different platform.
